The 2nd gen Thar has been a huge success story. So much so that even Mahindra themselves didn’t expect this kind of crazy response. I still remember the crazy buzz and waiting times for what is a 3-door off-roading SUV. It was a huge improvement over its predecessor, the CRDE in terms of the overall package right from performance, comfort, tech, features etc. I remember getting into it on the day of reveal and after juts driving it for a couple of kms, I said to myself, “I have to get one.” And three years after that day, I have it standing in my garage.
Mahindra gave the Thar a facelift in 2025 with some additional features to keep things fresh. However, now in 2026, the Thar gets a massive update with changes that more than skin deep and a new name. So, what’s the Thar OG all about? Let’s get right down to it.
Exterior
First up, and a big change is the new platform. The Thar OG is built on a shortened version of the M_Glyde 4G platform. This is same platform that underpins the bigger Thar Roxx.
Upfront, the Thar OG gets a new grille with 5 wide vertical slats and Thar badge embossed on it. There is a new front bumper as well and personally I think it looks better than the outgoing one. The Thar OG gets a wider track that really enhances the stance of the SUV. Also, it now gets front parking sensors.
There are new LED headlamps with C shaped DRLs (from the Roxx), cube shaped fog lamps and cornering lamps integrated into the upper part of the front bumper and slim LED turn indicators on the front fenders. The fog and cornering lamps do look like an afterthought in my opinion. Placing them in the bumper would have looked better.
On the side, you get a chrome Thar OG badge on the front fender. The plastic wheel claddings have been restyled a bit as well. The range topping ZXT variant features19-inch stardust grey satin diamond cut alloy wheels shod with 255/60 section all terrain tyres. While the alloy design is sporty, I have my reservations about 19-inch wheels on an off-roader. I feel 18-inch is more than enough, but that’s my personal take. The entry level trim gets 18-inch steel wheels. Also 19-inxh wheels make the ride more firm.
At the rear, there is a redesigned dual-tone bumper with vertical reflectors on both ends. The C-shaped LED tail lamps are carried over from the Roxx. The rear also features a prominent OG badge on the tailgate.
Dimensions wise the Thar OG measures 3,995 mm in length, 1,870 mm in width and 1,855 mm in height. Wheelbase stands unchanged at 2,450 mm. Ground clearance has increased by 6 mm to 232 mm.
The Thar OG comes in 8 colours – Tango Red, Artemis Silver (New), Jeans Blue (New), Everest White, Galaxy Grey, Battleship Grey, Deep Forest and Stealth Black.
The Thar OG is available in 3 trims – AXT, LXT and ZXT.
