Conclusion
The Thar OG takes everything that the Thar did well and takes it to much higher levels. Last year’s update with feature additions was definitely a stop gap thing, but it kept the Thar 3-door in the news. However, if it’s a facelift you are doing, the Thar OG is a perfect example of how it should be done. The Roxx may have stolen the Thar’s thunder after launch, affecting its sales but the OG brings it back in the game and how. The upgrades have made this SUV more desirable than before. I can already see many current 3-door Thar owners upgrading to the OG. Some who bought one in the recent past must be regretting for not waiting.
Mahindra has made an effort to make the Thar more user friendly and soft, but at the same time retaining its DNA. The Thar OG keeps all the strengths of the Thar 3-door, improves on its shortcomings making it a better overall package. The engines and capability were always a high point, there was no dearth of street presence and it always felt tough. The new suspension and other upgrades now make living with the Thar a lot more easier.
If it’s a Thar you always wanted but were holding back, the Thar OG gives you enough reasons to buy one. I will be interested to see the long term performance of the DaVinci dampers though. There is always a difference in on-road use and off-road use. It will be a test for their robustness over the long term. And is the Thar OG a SWB version of the Roxx? Not quite, but close.
Like I always say, the Thar was never about need, it was always about want. The Thar OG takes that ‘want’ factor even more higher.
