Volvo might assemble cars in India
Volvo has been exploring the possibility of assembling cars in India for a while now. Going ahead, the company might take a decision on local assembly of its cars by the end of this year.
Volvos are currently sold in India as Completely Built Unist and therefore they attract maximum duties and taxes. Local assembly should bring down prices to an extent and help Volvo take on the German rivals who have the advantage of ‘Make in India’. Volvo’s model range in India consists of the V40 Cross Country hatchback, S60 sedan, XC60 SUV, S80 sedan and XC90 SUV. Volvo recently launched the V40 Cross Country petrol in India and is set to bring in the new generation XC90 SUV later this month. A more powerful variant of the S60 sedan is also expected later this year.
Volvo is targeting sales of 2000 units in the current year and looking to have a total of 22 dealerships across the country by the end of 2015.
