India has seen a tsunami of Mercedes-AMG models being launched in the recent past and one more model, the C 63 is slated for launch on September 3. All the models launched so far are powered by AMG V8 engines with the the exception of the CLA 45 and GLA 45 which sport turbo charged four cylinder units. The German car maker however has no plans to bring the bigger V12 AMG engined models to India any time soon.
Speaking to Autocar India magazine, Eberhard Kern, MD and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India said,” We don’t have any concrete plans of bringing the AMG V12 engine as of now. The V8 engine in the S 63 AMG is a fantastic engine and fits perfectly into most of our top-end products. We would like to focus on the S 63 AMG and other AMG performance cars based on the MFA platform, which from our point of view are fit for India.”
Mercedes does not see a big enough market for the V12 AMG engine in India at the moment. The company says that the extremely limited sales would not justify the complex infrastructure and service setup required these cars.
Internationally the 6.0 litre V12 bi turbo engine that develops 630 bhp is offered in the G 65, SL 65 roadster, the S 65 sedan and the S 65 Coupé. There are few private imports of the S65 AMG and SL65 AMG that have been spotted on Indian roads.
