New Volvo 40 Series concepts unveiled
Swedish car maker Volvo has taken the wraps off their new 40 Series concepts. The two concepts are named ‘Volvo Concept 40.1’ and ‘Volvo Concept 40.2′. These concepts preview the upcoming XC40 compact SUV and the next gen V40 hatchback or S40 saloon.
The production version of the two concepts will be based on Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). The first cars of the Volvo Series 40 will go into production in 2017. The cars will be powered by Volvo’s new T5 Twin Engine, which comprises of a 3 cylinder petrol engine combined with an electric motor. The engine will be mated to a seven speed dual clutch gearbox. The company also announced a fully battery powered electric vehicle based on the CMA platform.
“Each member of our product family has its own distinct character, just like the members of a real family. CMA has helped us to capture something special, something youthful in our new concept cars. They have an energy, a disruptive and engaging urban character that makes them stand out amongst the crowd. This is the flavour of entry premium Volvos to come,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design, at Volvo Car Group. “By taking a modular approach to both vehicle architecture and powertrain development we have succeeded in leap-frogging many of the players in the premium segment,” said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development. “Our new battery electric powertrain variant opens yet another exciting chapter in the unfolding Volvo story.”
Volvo aims to sell one million electric cars globally by the year 2025.
