Mercedes-Benz has launched the all new GLS SUV in India at a price of Rs. 99.9 lakh ex showroom. The third generation GLS will be sold in India in two variants, the GLS400d and the GLS450 petrol. Prices are same for both variants.
The new Mercedes-Benz GLS measures 5,207 mm in length, 1,999mm in width, 1,823mm in height and has a 3,135 mm wheelbase. The new model 77mm longer and 22 mm wider than the old model. The wheelbase is longer by 60 mm as well. The new GLS features all LED headlamps that comprise of 112 LEDs in each unit that can give a light throw of 650 metres. It also gets new design 21 inch alloy wheels as standard.
The new GLS gets twin 12.3 inch screens for the digital instrument cluster and the MBUX infotainment system. The features list includes 5 climate control, panoramic sunroof, 64 colour ambient lighting, reclining rear seats, chauffeur package, 11 USB ports, two wireless charging outlets and 13 speaker Burmester sound system. The second and third row can be dropped flat via the touch of a button to make for 2,400 litres of boot space.
The GLS400d comes with a BSVI compliant 3 litre inline 6 cylinder diesel engine that develops 330 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque. It goes from 0 to 100 in a claimed 6.3 seconds.
The GLS450 comes with a BSVI compliant 3 litre six cylinder petrol motor putting out 367 horses and 500 Nm torque. It also gets an additional 22 hp and 250 Nm torque from a 48V EQ Boost mild hybrid system. It goes from 0 to 100 kph in a claimed 6.2 seconds.
Both engines come mated to a 9 speed torque convertor automatic gearbox and the Mercedes 4Matic all wheel drive system.
Safety features on the new GLS include 9 airbags, off-road ABS, blind spot assist, active brake assist, hill-descent control, a 360-degree camera and front and rear parking sensors.
In the 10 years that it has been in India, the GLS has sold 6,700 units. The new GLS directly rivals the BMW X7 in the Indian market.
