The Mercedes G-Class is a cult classic today and has been around for 38 years now. Even with its boxy looks, there are very few SUVs that match it in terms of character and persona. While we thought that the G-Wagen may be laid to rest soon, there is a new Mercedes G-Class that is in the works. Here is a first batch of spy photos snapped by the good guys at motor1.com.
The Mercedes G-Class prototype in these photos is a highly camouflaged test mule. One can however see the wide side step which is expected to be wider by 4 inches that that in the current gen car. The four wheel drive system is clearly visible due to the lack of the rear bumper in the prototype. Mercedes will be giving the new G-Class an electromagnetic steering and multi link suspension. There will also be new assistance systems that will help the G to keep up with the more modern competition. The classic boxy design of the Mercedes G-Class will remain the same but will get some aerodynamic bits, that will reduce the frontal drag coefficient of the new model. Lightweight material will also be used in the construction of the new G-Class, thereby helping the SUV to loose 200 kgs of weight.
The new Mercedes G-Class will be powered by a range of six cylinder petrol and diesel engines with 360 and 300 horsepower respectively. The engines are likely to be mated to Mercedes’ new 9 speed automatic gearbox. A 4.0 litre V8 turbo motor is also expected to make its way to the hood of the next generation G-Class.
The new Mercedes G-Class is expected to launch towards the end of 2017.
