Things change in the EQS when you hit the accelerator hard. The 855 Nm hits you like bullet and you get pushed back into the seat.
Mercedes-Benz EQS580 Suspension & Ride
The EQS comes with an air suspension set up similar to that on the S-Class. Ride quality is quite plush at moderate speeds with only hard bumps filtering in. Sport mode firms up things and more of the road surface will be felt inside the cabin. Handling is surprisingly good on a car that is so heavy. The weight of the batteries keep the car planted and body roll is well controlled as I found out going down the Lonavala Ghat. The rear wheel steering also plays its part in the handling prowess. At slow speeds the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels and in the same direction when you are above 60 kph. The rear wheel steering also makes taking u-turns in urban city conditions a breeze and will even put some smaller cars to shame.
Braking felt a little tricky to me. While they worked well in a mix of high and medium reg levels, there was a lot of pedal travel in zero regen mode and more effort is needed. It can catch you unaware. The strong regen mode works very well and is a boon in stop go traffic. You can easily do single pedal driving in this mode. Infact I used the left paddle to slow down multiple times instead of hitting the brake pedal. I found it that good.
Mercedes-Benz EQS580 Charging
Coming to the charging. The EQS gets AC and DC charging ports. A 15 min charge on a DC fast charger can give you a range of 300 kms. A 11Kw wallbox AC charger will charge from 10 to 80 percent in approx 10 to 11 hours . A regular 15A socket easily take more than a day. But with the kind of range this car offers, charging intervals will be much lesser compared to other cars on sale currently. The EQS comes with a service interval of 2 years/30,000 km and a battery warranty of 8 years or 160,000 kms.
