Mahindra Thar Roxx Engine & Performance

The Thar Roxx carries forward the engines from the 3 door Thar. That means you have the option of   2.0L mStallion turbo petrol and 2.2L mHawk diesel . Both engine options can be mated to either 6-speed manual or 6-speed Aisin torque converter automatic transmission.

The Petrol AT pumps out 177 horsepower and 380Nm torque whereas diesel churns out 172 hp and 370Nm torque. The mid and base variant get the same engines but in a little lower state of tunes. Also only the diesel comes with the 4×4 option. While we do agree that a petrol 4×4 will have less demand, having it on the variant would have been nice.

Our test car was the diesel manual with 4×4, and honestly, it is difficult to find faults. Mahindra’s diesels have been their forte since years now and this is no different. The NVH levels are pretty good to the fact that, at crank its difficult to tell whether its petrol or diesel. The low end on the diesel is very good and builds speed effortlessly. The diesel Roxx can chug along on the highway effortlessly at triple digit speeds and at the same time give enough grunt during off-roading.  When it comes to efficiency, the Roxx is a heavy SUV and the diesel will surely be easier on the pocket compared to the petrol.
