Engine & Performance
The Scorpio-N comes with the 2.2 MHawk diesel engine putting out 175 hp and 400 Nm torque and the 2.0 litre MStallion turbo petrol with 200 horses and 380 Nm. Both engines come with the option of a six speed manual or six speed automatic gearboxes. I got my hands on the diesel automatic for this drive.
I love the refinement that these new gen Mhawk diesels boast off. The acceleration is very linear and you don’t feel any lag whatsoever. The mid-range is pretty strong with that 400Nm. The wave of torque comes from lower rpms and that just gives fantastic driveability. The engine has an excellent match in the six speed automatic torque convertor. Shifts are smooth and no where do you feel jerky, not even during kickdown shifts. Throttle response is instant. However, it does tend to get confused at times when you play around with the throttle. I also drove back to Mumbai from Pune and the Scorpio-N cruises effortlessly on the highway at 100 kph. And such is the respect that the Scorpio commands, just one flash of the headlight and cars just give way. And that made me grin all the way though. Also had the chance to drive it in city traffic conditions and it does very well. The light steering makes it easy to drive and its fun to sit towering above the other vehicles on the road. The diesel also gets the Zip, Zap, Zoom driving modes from the XUV700. While Zip dulls throttle responses, there wasn’t a very noticeable difference between Zap and Zoom.
