Kia has finally taken the wraps off the Sonet compact SUV. The concept was first showcased at the Auro Expo 2020. The Sonet is Kia’s third model for the Indian market after the Seltos and Carnival.
The Sonet will be offered in two trim levels: Tech Liine and GT Line. At first glance the production version of the Kia Sonet looks very similar to the concept that was showcased earlier. Up front it gets the trademark tiger nose grille with 3D mesh, Crown Jewel LED headlamps with Heartbeat LED DRLs. The front bumper gets integrated fog lamps and a skid plate. From the side, the Sonet gets black body cladding, squarish wheel arches, 16 inch diamond cut alloy wheels and a thick C pillar. The rear features Heartbeat LED tail lamps connected by a reflector strip, rear spoiler, black cladding for the bumper and a skid plate.
On the interior, the Kia Sonet gets a 4.2 inch digital instrument cluster, 10.25 inch touchscreen infotainment with navigation, flat bottom steering wheel, ventilated seats for the driver and front passenger, 7 speaker BOSE sound system with Sub Woofer, wireless charger for smartphones with cooling function and LED sound mood lamps. The Tech Line will be offered with two tone beige interiors while the GT Line will feature an all black cabin.
The Sonet comes equipped with Kia’s Smart Pure Air Purifier with virus protection. It has a two-level purification system. The pollutant-cleansing HEPA filter incorporates N29 which uses fiber made from nano-ionic bonding technology of copper sulphide, to remove pollutants and bacteria from the cabin. The second level of filtration is achieved through UVC LED, scientifically proven to kill bacteria and viruses. The system not only effectively cleans out pollutants from the cabin, but also kills bacteria and viruses as it cleans the air.
The Kia Sonet gets the UVO connected car technology with 57 features including UVO Voice Assist that responds to’Hello Kia’. It also gets the Remote Engine Start function for both automatic and manual transmissions.
The Sonet will also be available with the UVO Smart Watch App Connectivity option, allowing users to interact with their vehicle via an Android, iOS or Tizen smartwatch. Additionally, the UVO LITE feature helps to control the Smart Air Purifier and infotainment system, making the Sonet’s connected features even easier to use. Additionally, the car will offer an auto anti-glare (ECM) rear-view mirror with UVO controls
The Kia Sonet will be offered with a host of powertrain options. These include a 1.2 litre petrol engine , a 1.0 three cylinder Turbo petrol and a 1.5 litre four cylinder diesel engine. Transmission options include 5 and 6 speed manuals, 7 speed DCT, 6 speed torque converter automatic and the new Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT). The diesel automatic combination is a segment first.
Safety features on thr Kia Sonet include six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), HAC (Hill-start Assist Control), VSM (Vehicle Stability Management) , Brake Assist, front and rear parking sensors, reverse camera, Highline tyre pressure monitor and ISOFIX.
The Sonet will be offered with up to eight monotone and three dual-tone exterior color options.
The Kia Sonet will compete with the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford Ecosport, Mahindra XUV300 and the upcoming Toyota Urban Cruiser in the Indian market.
