If you ever see a car in India, floating around with a Bentley-like badge, but not looking the part, it is a Genesis in all likelihood. Though the chances of finding one are bleak, it could change soon.
Genesis, the flagship of Hyundai’s product line up, was first showcased in the 2016 Auto Expo, but has since been left to oblivion. However, with a potentially overwhelming response to sister concern Kia’s debutante, the Seltos, Hyundai could plan to bring the Genesis brand to India.
If it comes, the Genesis will be assembled from a CKD kit, to keep costs low. Currently, the Genesis comprises of 3 sedans namely the G70, G80 and G90. Owing to the popularity of SUVs in India, however, we can expect to see a GV80 SUV that is based on the G80, which itself borrows from the Kia Telluride. Also on the books is a smaller GV70 SUV that is based on the next-generation Hyundai Tucson.
While there is no date of an India launch, the lack of right-hand drive samples is only going to delay the process. However, given that the GV70 shares its underpinnings with the Tucson that already sells in India, we can be hopeful of seeing it somewhere in the late 2020 or beyond.
