BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition revealed
BMW has revealed the i8 Protonic Red Edition. It will be officially unveiled at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.
The car gets a Protonic Red paint finish with accents in Frozen Grey metallic. It features BMW W-spoke 470 light-alloy wheels painted in Orbit Grey metallic with hubs painted in matt aluminium. On the interior, it gets red double-stitching and applications in high-grade carbon fibre and ceramic. Additionally there are ‘i8’ embossed head rests, “Protonic Red Edition” door sill plates and carbon fibre door handles.
Mechanically there are no changes. The i8 is powered by two electric motors mounted in the front that drive the front wheels and a mid mounted 1.5 litre 3 cylinder turbo petrol engine that does the duty of driving the rear wheels. This configuration makes the i8 an AWD. The electric motors put out 129 bhp and 250 Nm of torque while the petrol motor puts out 228 bhp and 320 Nm torque. This gives the i8 a combined power output of 357 bhp and 570 Nm torque.
Production of the i8 Protonic Red Edition will begin in July at BMW’s Leipzig plant and is expected to have a limited production run. BMW sold 5,456 units of the i8 globally last year.
