The Hyundai i20 was first launched in 2008 as a replacement for the Getz. After the initial launch, the i20 became an instant hit with the Indian buyer and the love for the premium hatchback has remained intact over the years. The i20 has always been a great package over all its generations. Now Hyundai has launched the third generation of the i20 in India (fourth if you consider the Getz) which is an all new car from scratch. The car maker aims to set the segment benchmark in the premium hatchback space again with the 2020 Hyundai i20 and we got to spend a day with it to explore it in detail.
2020 Hyundai i20 Exterior
As they say, don’t go by appearances and its true in case of the new i20. By the looks of it, initial impressions are that of a shrunken car with a low hood, large frameless grille, and aggressive looking headlamps. But it turns out; the i20 is longer by 10mm, wider by 41mm and has a larger wheelbase (10mm) compared to Elite i20. As a result, the legroom and shoulder room goes up by 88 mm and 40mm respectively. Infact it’s the widest in the segment. However, the height remains the same at 1505mm. The new i20 is built on Hyundai’s new K platform and uses the Sensuous Sportiness global design language. The swooping headlamps are LED units with new daytime running lamps. The large front grille gets a unique parametric jewel design and there are projector fog lamps in triangle housings in the front bumper. On the side, the first thing you notice are the 16 inch diamond cut alloy wheels that look quite sporty. An inclusion of a quarter glass on the C pillar ensures an airy and well-lit cabin at all times. The rear features Z shaped wrap around LED tail lamps connected by a chrome strip, which looks overdone in my opinion. There is an integrated roof spoiler and a shark fin antenna as well. Talking about little details, there is i20 branding inside the headlamps, tail lamps and the body cladding on the sides.
