Chevrolet has unveiled the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. While at first glance, it doesnt look too different from the predecessor, there are a host of changes in the sixth generation car.

The body has been areodynamically optimized in the wind tunnel for 350 hours and the car has shed 90 kg weight thanks to extensive use of aluminum in the construction. Structural rigidity has been increased by 28 percent while Chevrolet says that 70 percent of the car’s architectural components have been developed specifically for the new Camaro.

The standard Camaro gets halogen projector headlamps while the higher RS and SS variants get HID projectors with daytime running LEDs. The rear also gets LED tail lamps. 18 inch alloy wheels come as standard on the car with Goodyear Eagle Sport all-season tyres while the SS gets 20 inch wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 run-flat tyres.

It gets new multi-link MacPherson struts at the front and a five-link independent rear suspension with Magnetic Ride Control making its debut on the SS. For brakes, the new Camaro uses 12.6-inch (320 mm) front rotors with four-piston calipers and 12.4-inch (315 mm) rear rotors with single-piston sliding calipers on the Camaro LT while the SS gets standard Brembo 13.6-inch (345 mm) front rotors with four-piston fixed calipers and 13.3-inch (338 mm) rear rotors with four-piston fixed calipers.

Coming to the interior, there is an 8 inch TFT display for the instrument cluster with another 8 inch display screen on the centre console which houses the next generation MyLink infotainment system. There is LED ambient lighting and has a Drive Mode Selector with 4 modes: Snow/Ice, Tour, Sport and Track (SS only).

Coming to the engines, the new Camaro gets a new 2.0 litre four cylinder turbocharged engine developing 275 bhp and 400 Nm torque. It does the 0 to 100 kph sprint in under 6 seconds. There is also an option of a 3.6 litre V6 motor putting out 335 bhp and 385 Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to either a a six-speed manual gearbox or an optional new 8-speed Hydra-Matic 8L45 paddle-shift automatic gearbox.

The top of the line Camaro SS comes with a 6.2-liter V8 with 455 bhp and 617 Nm mated to a six-speed manual gearbox equipped with Active Rev Match technology or an optional 8-speed Hydra-Matic 8L90 paddle-shift automatic transmission.

The new Camaro will be made at Chevrolet’s Lansing assembly plant in Michigan.
