MG entered the Indian market with a bang with the Hector SUV, that brought with it a lot of firsts in terms of tech, followed by the ZS EV electric SUV. The excellent marketing strategy has brought success to MG Motor India despite being a new brand in India. Now with the third offering, the car maker is bringing in its full sized SUV, the Gloster. The MG Gloster is also sold as the Maxus D90 in China and the LDV D90 in Australia. It was first showcased in India at the Auto Expo 2020, and now several months later, it has finally launched to take on the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and the Mahindra Alturas. So does the MG Gloster have the ammunition to take on the competition? We spent a day with this SUV to answer that question.

MG Gloster Exterior

Let me get one thing out of the way… The MG Gloster is HUGE!! Dimensions? Get this. It measures 4,985 mm in length, 1,867 mm height 1,26 mm width and 2,950 mm wheelbase. That makes it larger than all its rivals. Only the Mahindra Alturas is wider at 1,960 mm. The massive size of course translate to immense street presence. The Gloster does look well proportioned. There are slim LED projector headlamps along with an XL size chrome front grille with horizontal slats adorned with a large MG logo. The sculpted bonnet looks muscular and adds to the large SUV characteristics. The front bumper has sharp cuts on either side for the flog lamp enclosures and there is a skid plate underneath. The side view reveals body cladding along the side and on the wheel arches. The Gloster comes with 19 inch alloy wheels with 255 profile tyres. While this  is not less by any means, the alloys do look a tad smaller when compared to the size of this SUV. Perhaps 20 inch alloys would have filled the wheel arches better. There is a fin on the front fender along with ‘ Brit Dynamic’ badges that features the Union Jack screaming the brand’s roots. A chrome strip runs along the window line right up to the C pillar joining the roof rails. At the rear, you get large LED tail lamps and a roof spoiler. The large Gloster lettering is too loud to my taste and while the quad exhaust pipes add a sporty touch, they look a little out of place on a large SUV. And if the Gloster lettering wasn’t enough, there is host of other badges like 4WD, ADAS, Internet Inside and the MG logo itself. The design overall looks balanced though there is dollops of chrome all around.

Contd…
