The doors of the Grand Cherokee open wide. There is no foot rest so you have to literally climb in. The interior, though not outright luxurious, has been well designed. The top of the dashboard has a soft touch feel and the stitching is nice too. The wood inserts are a good addition but the lower half of the dashboard is disappointing. The hard plastics lack the premium feel. Another sore point is the parking brake. In times when most cars in its category use electronic units, the parking brake in the Grand Cherokee is a lever placed in the foot well next to the accelerator and brake pedals. The placement is ergonomically awkward too, as it interferes as you try and place your left foot on the dead pedal. There is a thick three spoke steering wheel, which feels nice to hold. It comes with heating function and electric adjust for reach and rake. There are quite a few buttons on the steering wheel as well. While the left hand side buttons control the various settings of the vehicle, the right side buttons manage the cruise control feature. There are three blank button on the steering as well looking quite out of place.
You get a 7 inch LCD display for the instrument cluster. The cluster itself is easy to read and there are multiple settings that you can scroll through. You can also change the speedometer from kph to mph and vice versa. There are nice graphics to show which off-road mode you are in when you use the Selec-Terrain four wheel drive system. The audio controls are located behind the steering wheel just below the paddle shifters. We like the automatic gearbox shifting lever which feels right out of an aircraft. The controller for the four wheel drive system is placed just below the gear lever on the centre console. However, the plastics used in the centre console feel cheap and not fitting of a car costing over a crore of rupees. Even the array of buttons on the centre console do not have a very premium feel to them. There is an 8.4 inch touchscreen for the UConnect infotainment system. Every function that that is controlled by the buttons can be done via the touch screen itself. The touchscreen is very clear to read with big fonts. Though it does look old school, it is pretty responsive and easy to use.
The Grand Cherokee comes with a 9 speaker sound system with a subwoofer mounted in the boot. It comes with USB, Aux and Bluetooth Connectivity. It also gets a Blue Ray disc player that is fitted inside the central arm rest. The rear passengers get foldable rear entertainment screens that are folded into the back of the front seats. There are HDMI and Aux outputs in the side of the front seats as well.
The front seats are large (typical American) and supportive. They feature eight way electric adjust and memory function. They also features 4 way electric lumbar adjust. They are ventilated and get heating function as well. Comfort levels are good. There is ‘Overland’ embossed on the back rests of the front seats. Overland is a variant of the Grand Cherokee available abroad. The rear seats are placed on a lower level, (seat base) but have good under thigh support. The backrest can also be reclined for better comfort. A third passenger won’t feel uncomfortable either because the transmission tunnel isn’t high. The rear seats get heating function but are not ventilated. The rear passengers get their own AC vents but the console looks pretty dated straight out of the 90s. Other features include a panoramic sunroof, rain sensing wipers, dual zone climate control, powered tail gate, parking sensors, reverse camera, keyless entry and keyless go. The sunroof has separate controls to open the outer glass and the inner roof. Boot capacity stands at 1025 litres that can go up to 1945 litres with the middle row folded down. The button for the powered tail gate is located on the left side in the boot.
