“Dad.. I am getting the Jeep Grand Cherokee home for a review” There is a huge smile on his face on hearing this piece of news, and why not? He is a huge fan of the Cherokee from his days in the Gulf and always aspired to own one. “Ahh so finally” he says. “But hasn’t it take too long?” he adds. He couldn’t be more right. You see, I had promised him the Cherokee when I drove the Wrangler a couple of years ago. But before I could get to review it, Jeep postponed it’s India plans. Now come 2016, Jeep has finally set foot on Indian soil. And we got our hands on the Grand Cherokee. The Jeep Grand Cherokee will be sold in India in three variants; Limited and Summit diesel and the range topping SRT V8 petrol. We have the Summit diesel for this review. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is now in it’s fourth generation. Codenamed the WK2, it shares it’s platform with the W166 Mercedes ML-Class. The Grand Cherokee has presence, loads of it. You get the trademark Jeep grille with seven wide vertical slats. There are stylish, futuristic looking headlamps with the funky looking daytime running lamps outlining them. The headlamps have some fantastic detailing too. While you will find a Jeep design in the strip inside the right headlamp, there is ‘Since 1941’ lettering inside the left headlamp. A very nice touch indeed. The fog lights are housed in the front bumper, while there are two exposed tow hooks on the lower side of the bumper. The Grand Cherokee does not carry a curvy design and that gives it a very butch stance. The square wheel arches add a lot of character to the side profile. ‘Grand Cherokee’ lettering can found on the lower side of the front doors. The rear on the other hand looks rather plain. Looking at it from behind, it can pass off as just any other SUV. There are wrap around tail lamps that have an internal design similar to the DRLs at the front. Prominent Jeep lettering adorns the tail gate with the 4×4 and SUMMIT badges on either side lower below. There are two exhaust pipes one on either side of the rear bumper. The Grand Cherokee gets dollops of chrome splashed all over including the front grille, door handles, tow hooks, fog lamp surrounds, roof rails and loading lip for the boot. The Summit gets large 20 inch five spoke alloys with wide 265 profile tyres. The lower Limited variant gets 18 inch alloys. The Grand Cherokee is very intimidating on the road. Over the weekend that we drove it around, people stopped in their path, jaws dropped, heads turned and what’s more even a bus stopped to give way. And yes, we enjoyed every bit of the attention.
