Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has revealed details of the Jeep Compass that will be launched in India. India is one of the four countries where the Compass SUV will be made, the other countries include China, Brazil and Mexico. The Compass will be produced at Fiat’s Ranjangaon facility near Pune.
The Jeep Compass looks like a smaller version of its bigger sibling, the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It features a dual tone exterior, a slimmer grille with tapering headlights, squared wheel arches, large alloy wheels and LED tail lamps. The interior of the Jeep Compass features a a 3.5- or 7-inch LED display for the instrument cluster. The full-color 7-inch display is the largest in the segment. The centre console houses a touchscreen display for the UConnect infotainment system. The Jeep Compass will come with the fourth gen UConnect system and will come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The steering wheel gets integrated audio, voice and speed controls. The centre console also has the gear-shift selection, Selec-Terrain controls, engine stop-start (ESS) controls, climate and volumecontrol knobs, and easily accessible media charging and connectivity ports.The Compass will get the Jeep Active Drive SelecTerrain 4×4 system. It features a disconnecting rear axle and power take-off unit (PTU), in order to provide 4×4 models with enhanced fuel economy. Jeep Active Drive SelecTerrain 4×4 system instantly engages when 4×4 traction is needed.
The India spec Jeep Compass will get FCA’s “small wide architecture,” a fully independent suspension with Frequency Selective Damping in front-and-rear-strut system, and electric power steering.
The upper body structure and frame are engineered as a single unit for a stiff and more mass-efficient structure, and it is designed and built with an extensive use of high-strength steel and liberal use of structural adhesives. More than 65percent high-strength steel is used for maximizing vehicle dynamics and crash performance while optimizing weight efficiency.
The Compass for India will come with a diesel and petrol engine mated to a manual or automatic gearbox.
The Compass is slated for India launch mid 2017 and will come in three trim levels.
