German automaker Mercedes-Benz recently unveiled a concept rendition of its all-electric saloon on its home turf at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Launched under the sub-brand EQ, the Vision EQS, as it is called is fourth in the series of more than 10 electric vehicles that shall be launched by 2022. The car features a dedicated steel–aluminium–carbon fibre spaceframe, that is known as the Modular electric architecture (MEA) platform internally.
The powertrain comprises of two electric motors on both axles for a four-wheel-drive system. This results in performance figures of 477hp, 759 Nm and a 4.5s time span to reach a 100 km/h. The car can go up to a top speed upwards of 200 km/h.
The 100 kWh lithium-ion battery is designed to support 350kW charging, which can charge the battery from flat to 80% in just 20 minutes and imparts over 700 km worth of electric range.
In terms of design, the electric platform enables employment of a shorter front overhang, a forward seating windscreen and a low centre of gravity by modern standards. The front and rear are an all-LED affair with as many as 940 individual modules used throughout the car.
The cabin is styled like a yacht and uses many sustainable materials which include a special material from recycled PET bottles that closely emulates Nappa leather.
The production version of the EQS is positioned against the rivals such as the pure electric Jaguar XJ, Tesla Model S and Audi e-Tron GT. It will also be the basis for a Maybach iteration that will serve to take on Rolls Royce.
