Mahindra is best known for their SUVs but so far they haven’t had a presence in the higher premium space that is dominated by the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour. Mahindra is now leaping into this segment and the weapon of choice is this, the Alturas G4. It is essentially the latest gen SsangYong Rexton which was showcased by Mahindra at the Auto Expo 2018. For the Indian market, it comes badged as a Mahindra and gets the Alturas G4 model name. The previous Rexton didn’t really set the sales charts on fire so will this new SUV bring a change of fortune for Mahindra? Read on to find out.
2019 Mahindra Alturas G4 Exterior
The Alturas G4 is the largest SUV produced by Mahindra and will be sold via the CKD route in India. The name Alturas stands for ‘height’ in Spanish while G4 denotes the fourth generation of the Rexton. The Alturas G4 is larger than its predecessor in terms of dimensions. It measures 4850 mm in length, 1960 mm width, 1825 mm height and has a wheelbase of 2865 mm. This translates to more overall space inside the cabin. For the record, the Alturas G4 has a longer wheelbase than the Fortuner that stands at 2745 mm. At first glance, you notice the sheer size of this SUV. The large bonnet with muscular haunches looks imposing. Upfront the Alturas gets the trademark vertical chrome slat front grille with a large Mahindra logo (The Rexton features a different grille design). The large projector headlamps swoop to the front fender and feature nice detailing. Daytime running lamps are integrated into the headlamp units. The large front bumper gets LED fog lights with integrated cornering lamps On the side, the flared wheel arches at both at the front and rear give a very beefy stance. There are dual tone 18 inch alloy wheels with 255/60 section tyres. There is a crease line that runs across the upper side of the body between the fender arches. The high ground clearance of 244 mm (unladen) is apparent when the Alturas G4 is viewed from the side. The are LED lamps in the door handles as well. The roof line tapers downwards towards the end and the roof comes with roof rails as well. The rear appears rather tame when compared to the aggressive front. What you get is large wrap around LED tail lamps, a rear wiper and a roof spoiler. There is a thick chrome strip that runs between the tail lamps an a large ‘Alturas G4’ badge at the bottom centre of the tail gate that looks cheap. A smaller badge in a corner would have looked better. On the right hand side is a 4wd badge. Fog lamps are integrated into the rear bumper.
