First Made in India Volvo car rolls off assembly line
Swedish luxury car maker Volvo has joined the Make in India movement by rolling out the first locally assembled model from the Bengaluru plant. The XC90 SUV is the first model to be locally assembled in India. Volvo had announced plans for local assembly earlier this year.
Volvo’s local assembly operations are based near Bengaluru city in South India. Focus will be on models based on Volvo’s SPA modular vehicle architecture and these models are on plan for local assembly as well apart from the XC90. The car maker will announce plans soon.
Volvo Cars is working together with Volvo Group India, the truck, bus, construction equipment and Penta engines manufacturer for its assembly operations and is making use of Volvo Group India’s existing infrastructure and production licenses near Bengaluru.
Volvo currently has a segment share of about 5% in India and aims to double this by 2020.
