2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC220d Engine & Performance
The new GLC not only gets cosmetic updates and more equipment, but comes with a new heart too. The GLC220d now comes with a 2.0 four cylinder diesel engine (OM654) that is compliant with the upcoming BS VI emission norms. The motor makes 194 hp and 400 Nm of torque. Straight off, what impresses is the refinement of this engine. It is very responsive making it easy to drive around in city. And it doesn’t disappoint on the highway either. There is a nice mid-range punch and the GLC can cruise effortlessly all day long. Mated to the engine is the 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox sending power to all four wheels via the 4Matic all wheel drive system. The transmission has been tuned well for urban driveing and shifts are very smooth when driven with a light foot. Try mashing the throttle pedal for a downshift on the highway and the gearbox does take a second or two to respond.
The GLC is also offered in the GLC200 guise powered by a BS VI compliant 2.0 lite four cylinder turbo petrol putting out 197 hp and and 320 Nm of torque. We only got to drive the diesel this time around, so the petrol review will come up at a later date.
2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC220d Ride and Handling
The suspension setup is on the firmer side but there isn’t a compromise on ride quality as such. It easily goes over road undulations and potholes that you may encounter with only the very bad ones making their presence felt, nothing that would unnerve the passengers though. Steering feedback is good and it weighs up nicely at high speeds. There is a good amount body roll when going quickly around corners but the GLC isn’t meant to be driven in that fashion anyway. It is more of a relaxed cruiser that will transport your family in comfort, all day everyday. While the braking is spot on, the pedal did need a firmer push than usual. However the GLC now comes with Active Brake Assist, This will stop the car automatically if it detects a collision.
