2018 Volvo XC60 Interior

Open the door to the cabin and you know Volvo’s focus is on outright luxury. The interiors of the new XC60 feel leaps ahead of those of its rivals. The top of the dashboard comes wrapped in leather. There are drift wood inlays that run across the dash and raw finish of the wood feels all the more special. There is a layer of matt chrome trim that also features on the dashboard. The centre is occupied by the 9 inch tablet touch screen with the Sensus infotainment system that we now used to seeing in the new gen Volvos.  This of course eliminates the need for most physical switches and buttons. The all new instrument cluster comprises of a 12.3 inch TFT screen with high end graphics. The leather wrapped steering wheel gets heating function, feels nice to hold and gets paddle shifters and steering mounted controls. The XC60 scores high on the equipment list. It gets a Heads UP Display that shows speed, navigation and traffic signs, Nappa leather upholstery, front seats gets ventilated and massage function (segment first).  The rear seats are comfortable too and have good support. However they miss out on the goodies that the front seats get, which is a shame considering most owners spend their time here. Legroom and headroom is in good measure and occupants wont have anything to complain about. However a third passenger might find it a tough fit due to the protruding climate control unit. The four zone climate control cools the cabin instantly. For the sunroof lovers, there’s a panoramic one and we love those.  And then there is the awesome Bowers & Wilkins sound system. The XC60 gets 15 speakers as opposed to 19 seen in the XC90 and V90 Cross Country.  But the Gothenburg Concert Hall experience remains unchanged. Bryan Adams would be pleased hearing his six strings in the Volvo, that he originally played in the Summer of 69. And incidentally, that was one of the tracks we played during our drive to Pondicherry on the ECR with the 1100 Watts on full song. The fact that it was the Live version made the concert setting experience of the B & W all the more surreal. I’ve said it before but I can’t help saying it again. This is the best stock sound system I have heard in any car..Period. The tail gate is power operated, plus if you have your hands full with shopping, just wave your foot under the boot and it will pop open. You can also lower the rear of the XC60 via buttons in the boot. This translates to a lower loading lip that helps in loading luggage in a more comfortable manner. And while we are on the topic of boot space, you get all of 505 litres of it. There’s a space saver tucked in the wheel well under the boot floor.

2018 Volvo XC60 Safety

Volvo says it wont let you to meet your creator if you ever have an accident in a new Volvo from 2020. And we definitely nod in agreement. The list of safety features that the XC60 comes with is longer than your Mom or better half’s  monthly shopping list. And what’s more it features radar based safety features as well. The long list includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Pilot Assist, Lane Keeping Aid, Active High Beam, Park Pilot Assist, a 360 degree camera, Collision Mitigation Support at front and rear, Blind Spot Detection and Traffic alert, 8 airbags, ABS with EBD..Phew…

Contd…
